Cover Figure

The Journal of General Physiology 118 1 Cover picture: Model of the conformational changes in the Shaker K channel, showing that R362 moves from a distant location (>20 A) to a position 8 A from E418 during activation (step 1). R362 does not affect slow inactivation by an electrostatic mechanism, instead an allosteric mechanism of activation-inactivation coupling is proposed (steps 24). See related article by Elinder, F., R. Männikö, and H.P. Larsson, in this issue, pp. 1-10.
