Cover picture:The receptor-regulated signaling pathway of bacterial chemotaxis. The homodimeric, a-helical chemoreceptor serves as the structural framework for the assembly of a supermolecular complex containing the adaptation enzymes CheB/CheR, the kinases CheA/CheY, and the coupling protein CheW. Attractant binding to the receptor periplasmic domain inhibits kinase activity, whereas covalent modification of the cytoplasmic adaptation sites stimulates kinase activity.
