The Journal of General Physiology 119 4 Cover picture:Cellular events underlying the biphasic activation of cilia by acetylcholine. Continuous cross talk between [Ca2+]i, and the cAMP and cGMP pathways underlie the complex activation of cilia by acetylcholine. The initial strong enhancement of ciliary activity is governed mainly by PKG and elevated [Ca2+]i, whereas PKA and PKG, independently of Ca2+, are responsible for the ensuing sustained moderate activation.
