COVER PICTURE: The entry of Na+ into rat taste receptor cells (TRCs) through apical Na+ channels (ENaCs) depolarizes TRCs, leading to neural responses resulting in the perception of sodium salt taste. Acids also enter TRCs and inhibit Na+ entry through ENaCs, which decreases the neural responses to NaCl.
