COVER PICTURE: The unitary conductance of BK channels is enhanced in bilayers formed from negatively charged phosphatidylserine (PS), as compared to zwitterionic phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). But the kinetics of block by intracellular Ba2+ do not differ in PS vs. PE. Such observations are inconsistent with a surface charge hypothesis and require new models to explain the modulation of K+ channel function by membrane lipids. See related article by Park, J.B., H.J. Kim, P.D. Ryu, and E. Moczydlowski in this issue, pp. 375-397.)
